LARGE MESOPOTAMIAN TURKISH RUG
SIZE: 11'5" X 19'4"
This beauty was woven in a remote mountain village of Yeni Köy, Malatya with all hand-spun Black Mountain wool and vegetable dyes. My friend, who helped me have this rug made, was one of the master antique rug restorers and an expert in vegetable dyes is from the region, thus, speaks Kurdish and Turkish.
It took 6 villagers about 18 months to weave the rug. Since this is not an organized (mass-produced) rug, people would weave the rug after their regular daily chores.
It was done in the middle of a bad winter. In order to bring it down the mountain, we had to be creative, but the two Kurdish brothers who were my guides were very creative.
The weaving is very dense that it is not possible to make a dent on the pile with your fingers. The use of thick wool, such as on this rug, makes the knots bigger and tougher.
Because of the size of the rug, it needs a very special home to fit.

MESOPOTAMIAN TURKISH AREA RUG (RUGS)
DETAILS
This is produced by Karavan in the mountain villages of Eastern Turkey. There is nothing to do in these areas during the harsh winter that Karavan was like the only job provider in those mountains. These rugs are all hand-knotted with totally vegetal dyes and 100% hand-spun Turkish wool. The designs are reproduced from museum pieces. Sometimes different rug motives are mixed with which the weavers are familiar. They are extremely durable.
